Backrooms Recovery Walkthrough & Guide
Last checked: October 13, 2026. Unofficial guide. Gameplay details below come from watching a full playthrough on YouTube (Backrooms Recovery FULL GAME by Watermelon Ninja, about 18 minutes), which is a good reference if you want to see it in motion. The ending section has spoilers and is marked.
What kind of game this is
Backrooms Recovery is a free first-person horror escape game from Sleepless Games, played in the browser on Poki (desktop, phone and tablet). You don't fight anything. You explore, rebuild your memory, and stay away from the things in the halls.
Game modes
The main menu shows five modes: Free Roam, Normal and Hard are playable from the start, while Nightmare and Liminal appear locked. We haven't confirmed how Hard differs from Normal, or what unlocks the locked modes.
Walkthrough
1. The playground intro
You start on a sunny playground. Find the pink bunny plush and touch it: you fall straight into the backrooms. On-screen text reads "Welcome to the backrooms" and "Gather your memory fragments to escape."
2. Into the backrooms
Now you're in the yellow halls. A MEMORY % counter sits in the top-right corner, starting at 0%. Hints rotate on screen: "Recover your memory to escape", "Don't get caught", "Avoid the shadows" and "Never look behind." On the left of the HUD you'll see a battery that drains over time, plus a few ability icons (see controls).
3. Raise memory from 0% to 100%
This is the whole game: explore, pick up every memory source you find, and avoid the entities. Small gains add up, and the bigger "capturing" objects give the big jumps. See how memory works below.
4. Reach 100% and the ending
Once the counter hits 100%, the game moves you to the final sequence. Details are in the ending section (spoilers).
How memory works
- Drops: small black puddles with an eye in them. Walking into one gives a small boost (roughly 1–5%). The game tells you "Drops restore your memory."
- CAPTURING objects: some special objects start a "Capturing" bar when you look at them. Keep looking until it fills to get a bigger boost (roughly 8–15%) and a short flash vision. In the playthrough these included the keyhole of pink flower doors, a rocking horse and a large puddle.
- White bunny toy: gives a small gain.
- Polaroids: photos on the walls (for example "Friends met" and "It's real") are story lore. In the video they didn't add memory.
- Death doesn't reset it: your memory % is kept after you lose a life.
Entities and how to avoid them
- TV-Head: a tall brown humanoid with an old CRT TV for a head, showing a blue smiley. It chases you when it can see you, and a catch costs one life. Break its line of sight by turning corners.
- Green floating mask: lunges at you. Keep moving and give it room.
- Blue floating mask: also lunges. In the video, being hit didn't cost a life; the player respawned nearby.
- Pink bunny: the normal pink bunny runs away from you down the halls and is harmless.
Lives
You have 4 lives, shown as floppy disks. Each time TV-Head catches you, you lose one disk. Your memory progress stays.
Hazard: the floor pits
One area has a grid of pits in the floor. Cross it by walking slowly along the narrow beams between them.
Ending (spoilers)
Spoiler warning: click to reveal the ending
At 100% memory you're teleported to a long, bright hallway with the message "Never look behind." The bunny plush turns into a toothy monster, and then the game returns you to the main menu. We haven't confirmed whether other endings exist.
